The Mercury recording company, was in front in the early stereoperiod
tecnoligy, employing very skillfull people to make the recording, they emfassed a live and natural sound, and tried to get the music to the border of what was possible at the time of the late 1950´s.
The records are almost always superbly clear, open, ultradynamic, and getting close to the limits of recordproduction, they can be noisy due to the not always perfect vinyl.( this is true for FR & RFR´s colorbacks, later they loose the magic)
I like Mercury´s a lot, because they take my system to the limit, and gives my a life-performance that most other labels dont do, a bit of surface noise, and a little hum & hiss does not bother me at all, you dont hear it when the record really gets going

    1 st record:
SR-90005, Paul Paray,DSO Ravel,Chabrier, Bolero etc. this is one of the earlist Mercury´s, the sound is warm and inviting, good body in the performance, vinyl is a bit noisy, but it is not in the liga of the best Mercury´s

    2 nd record:
SR 2-9006, Anatole Fistolari,LSO,Delibes Sylvia complete Ballet, i like this record very much, first it turned out to be in mint state, when i cleaned it, with no noise what so ever( this is a rare state to find any record in,and is first revealled when you have cleaned and playing afterwards, has only happend a few times( in all 30 times, all memorable moments when you play them the first time :-). ) in my collecting years.
How does it sound then ? i would say like a dream, with scale, hight, weith, deepth, clear airy, warm, natural and great dynamic performance, do i need to say more, its simply stunning, if just all records would be like this, they rarely do.

    3 rd record:
    SR-90122,Antal Dorati,LSO, Borodin,Rimsky-Korsakov Le Coq D´Or etc.
This one sound close to the SR 90005 record, but it goes way deeper in the bass, and is clearer in the sound, and it works really good with the music on this album, i like it a lot.

    4 th record:
SR-90172, Antal Dorati,MSO, Copland Rodeo, etc.
This is a stunner when it comes to dynamics and ultimate clarity, you are pushed back in the seat, stunned of the impact of the music hitting you, thats the best way to conway my expienace with this record, if you like Copland this is one to own, its among my favorite records in my collection.

Very good Mercury examples here...I have at least one copy of them all. The Copeland (sr-90172) especially conveys the very essence of the Mercury sound... a very "up front" and in-your-face presentation. Played on a good rig, it can transport you right into front row, orchestra hall. It has all the sonic weight of brass and percussion right at you with stunning realism...so typical of the best Mercuries. There are many of them. I'll have to dig through my collection and post a few others.
