Press back rocker. Bought at an auction. Taken completely apart and refinished with colour matching pieces. Would like to know appropriate insert for seat bottom and any idea of age.

In looking at the pictures and what has been done I seriously doubt the seat will have much effect on value. You might tip it up and look under it for a hint about the original seat.

Looks like it had a cane seat-- pretty typical to fill the oval hole.

BUT based on the embellishments, I don't think there is any reason to restrict yourself to how it was originally!

Scott put it gently and I would agree with it having had a cane seat originally. The seat material no longer matters. The chair is no longer what it once was. Obviously you are keeping it as opposed to having it as an investment so the seat material should probably be what pleases you. Perhaps a bright pink with green stars.

Thanks so much for all your ideas. The chair was pretty rickety so I had to take it apart and clean all the old glue out of the rungs. I saw a similar paint job in a Country Living magazine and well ? It's been 25 years since I took on that project. Considering a cane seat or heavy leather insert to finish it off. It would be nice to discover who was the builder though.
