Beautiful - it looks to have Peruvian style/colors to me. Not sure exactly, but that's where I'd start looking - possibly it was made by someone from an indigenous group in South America.

    Thanks Sean
Thanks hunter I was thinking it looked South America
I've not heard of Peruvian, I will look it up thanks again :)

sure thing - I couldn't quite find the right style, so maybe it's not from Peru...but the colors are close.

Is it made from wool & how is it woven?
  10. Phatbuddha Phatbuddha, 4 years ago
I don't know if it's wool or how it's woven, sorry walksoftly
Rugs isn't really my thing but this one is pretty unusual

    This link will tell you how to determine what type of material was used;

There appears to be a herringbone pattern to the background/base weave & the decorative pattern & motifs are applied to that. ??

Thanks for that, il test it over the weekend :)
  13. Phatbuddha Phatbuddha, 4 years ago
Thanks walksoftly, I've just done the test and it's wool :)
I will look in to the patterns that you said too. Thanks again

    Hiya mankin :) thanks
Hope you had a good time over the hoildays.
The underside of the rug looks pretty much like the front, it's hard to tell which is which from a little distance.
    The size is W 173 cm L 262 cm it's huge
I've done some research but can't find nothing like it.

cant really tell from the pics, but I believe you will find the rug has been chained or a sumac weave. Parts of it are definitely chained, but the background may be soumac, sometimes referred to as sumak. Looks very South american . Nice find

Cis2you sorry about the Quality of the photos, I will work on it.
I think you are right about it being chained together.
I don't know what soumac or sumak is, could you fill me in, thanks

chain is a stitch done on top of a weave- its a common stitch used in crochet-but not as common in weaving. It adds terrific texture. Soumac is an overhand weave - it takes a weft over the top of the warp (vertical) and under before encircling the next warp. Common weaver terms. The colors of this rug tips me off that it is probably from s.a. The animal figures also indicate S.A.
