My father is in his 80's now and was told this ring was his grandfather's ring, who passed away in 1890 or thereabouts in Peak Hill NSW.
The gold is said to be from Peak Hill gold mine. The ring is small and just fits my little finger. The setting is open at the underside where unpolished opal can be seen.
The opal is damaged... There is a chip missing from the pointy end of the tear drop shape.
My dad has had the ring stashed away for ages, at least since my grandmother passed away in the 1970's.
It obviously has more sentimental value than monetary value, but if someone could shed some light on the mystery... Is it a lady's ring? Can the stone be repaired... Is it better to leave as is... Or use the gem for recutting as a pendant etc...

It's gorgeous. Holding on to it all that times shows your father's wonderful character. Congratulations on having such a beautiful (as is) piece of family jewelry. I hope you enjoy it for many years in good health.
Personally I would take it to a jeweller who specializes in gemstones.Get their opinion.

It would help if we could read the hallmarks. that could let use know who made it and roughly when . what are the markings ??
