    found these large one cent pieces in my grandfaters old safe along with
    hundreds more. the dates are 1827,1848 and 1857.what i caint figure out is why i have so many with holes drilled in them.

      Possibly once attached to a coin bracelet.

      We have these also. Once they are punched out they are about worthless.

      I have several old British coins like this as well.

      They are so common that I have used more current 1's to make the swivel medallions that cover the assembly bolt holes at the foot of beds I've made for myself. The coin with 2 holes are also made to put a string etc. thru & the fact that they are drilled where it will stay level shows that.

      The biggest reason to punch holes in them were to hang them from a rope, so not to loose them while out. Parents mostly did this for their children to not loose the hard earned money.

      maybe i should punch holes in my money,it seems i have a hard time holding on to it also
