This was recently found - I can't make out if it was an ice holder that might have belonged to an ice chest or if it is an entirely separate piece. FINGER JOINTS on all sides. Measurements: 9 x 7.25 inches x 9 inches deep. The metal insert does not come out. as you can see there are 6 holes drilled in the bottle of the metal for possible drainage. There is also a total of 4 old screws on each side of the box holding the metal liner in place. Is this an orphan from a much larger ice box? Thanks....B
As a start those are not dovetail joints, they are finger joints and appear to be machine cut. I wonder if you could post a picture of the bottom under where the holes are?
Are you related to the Brunelle's of South Hadley, Mass. ?
my father - born in Brewster, MA in 1930. not aware of any relative left on that side of the fam....i am in tax crazy Calif.

Okay - I just asked because they are second cousins of mine (married to one of my grandmother's sisters) - very possible we are related way down the line.
That is an awesome wood box.
My first thought was an ice bucket. about the right size and has handles. The holes in the bottom would not be a good idea for that,lol
The holes look like they could have been done later, maybe to make a planter. Are they perfectly spaced and no burrs around them?
It also appears the screws on the lower side may be holding the wood base in, not the tin liner.
It has all the signs of being an early 1900's to 1950's item.
Yes...it looks like a small icebucket. The inside is not tin but is a much heavier metal

Okay, I got it. I can't believe I didn't think of this before because I once had a complete one, but the wood was quite rotted.
This is a old 6 volt car battery case.

okay....so not being a car buff....this held the battery for an automobile back in the ?? can I get a range of dates possibly. still going to use it for an ice bucket but I guess should recatagorize it! BB
This is the outside jacket of the actual battery. It would have been used in the 1920's for sure and maybe even later. The liner is probable zinc and would have been part of the battery, less the holes.
It would make a great ice bucket using a small bag like you get at the motels. We have a Delco clear glass battery case in the bath room for cotton balls.
If I run across a photo of your battery I'll post it.
thank you I'm extremely grateful for this news. I love antiques that I can use for another purpose...and I love wine ....so we're all good! this was in my father's garage...he passed in 2010. I think he would enjoy knowing that I researched it and other people got to see it. Thx again!
