This vase was purchased at an auction and is really quite beautiful. It measures 9.5" x 3.5". I is painted in gold, silver and copper paint. The design includes leaves, dragonfly and butterfly. It is marked in gold on the bottom with a 30 and what looks like a period. The top rim has white painted lines and the base has white painted dots. If you know what this is, please let me know. I found this information and wonderd if it applies to this vase? Dragonflies were popular symbols in all kinds of decorative arts and jewelry during the Aesthetic Movement, roughly between 1870-1900. (We're all familiar, in the United States, with the famous Tiffany Dragonfly Lamp which came a bit later.) Dragonflies, as well as butterflies, were seen during this time as not only objects of art that could be made in forms, and with materials and colors that were almost magical, but as symbols of the ethereal. In real life they were beautiful, light, captivating. They hovered and were soon gone. In a time of grieving in the US after the Civil War and, in England where the Aesthetics celebrated "art for art's sake" and a profound interest in nature, the dragonflies had meaning that was a bit more than art.
