    (199 items)

A wooden canteen was posted last week & I said I would poste mine. Here "t'iz". I made about a half doz. just because I had always liked them, so in the mid '80's made a few. Hey, kept me busy, off the streets and out of trouble! The ship image has faded over the yrs..
I see no category to put this under so called it arts & crafts. Staff would change it anyway.

Nice job-- unfortunately, many folks think that these are old!

AND, yours looks like it is more historically accurate than the copper spouted example from last week!

Of course, you are right again Scott. Thanks for the compliment. Actually they weren't hard to make & once you jig-up for each piece, making a doz. is as easy as making a few.

Awesome craftsmanship again BB2. NICE PIECE!!

Pops, not keeping me off the streets and out of trouble now. Somebody told me that the SXM zoo had a pic. of me next to the goats that read, "NON_INDIGENOUS WILDLIFE". Not quite sure how to take that?

so what kind of wood is it made out of............
    14. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 10 years ago
So Wind, you want to know what kind I used 30 years ago? What would you like it to be? Forgot that I even made them until I found this 1 in a closet. I believe it is oak.
    15. Windwalker, 10 years ago
lol the only reason I asked was ...I was thinking he.. being you ,,,must of used a wood that would swell up fast to hold water that's all ..either that or just tight joints and a good glue but that would be cheating and you wouldn't take the easy road would ya ....lol
    16. Windwalker, 10 years ago
p s did you heat the bands so they shrink on the canteen,,,,? like a oak whiskey barrel...
    17. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 10 years ago
Wood that swells fast also sweats fast & loses water. I used hard wood with no glue & all close fits, including the necks (which should have been bound in brass). They worked & held water well. The main trick was making sure all the slats were the same width so the angle of the long cuts would meet flush when assembled. Of course the long cuts on the slats had to be a smooth cut to seal right. I gave them away to friends & people who liked them & probably had mine by chance. Fun project. Since the bands needed to be heated & hard to paint afterwards, I used good heat resistant paint & simply heated in the oven before tapping on. As I remember, the sling strap bars I made out of copper/brass. I drew the canteens together with screw clamps before making the outer rings/hoops & then measured for the bands. Does this answer your question "Grasshopper"? I haven't worked with Amer. woods in many decades, so guessing on what it is.

lol that will work ......smiling..... now what ya know about the knights of the golden circle..if not much; you should read rebel gold..
    19. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 10 years ago
I know what you're talking about Wind but haven't lived on Uncle Sambo's Plantation for about 42 yrs.. Noticed a documentary about it but didn't pay much mind. If the Confederates had any gold reserves, they would have gotten help to win the war. I toss that aside as Hollywood. Know absolutely nothing about the K.G.C.. Never heard of it while growing up in AL. Hollywood takes a minor scrap of truth & builds a "truth" out of it. Sorry.
    20. Windwalker, 10 years ago
no no... the k g c lives today my friend .............lol
you would have to read rebels gold.. to see its out there in the background ...it was built by Mr Pike ,..who also built other groups aswell...

Well, I'm certainly not one of the sentinels or they would be broke! Wouldn't mind reading that book but shipping cost prohibit me from picking up a lot of nick-nacks I want & besides, I have spent all their gold anyway.
    23. Windwalker, 10 years ago
well been looking for a truck all day lol ,..its funny how the market is being control by the car dealers here in the states .. you could buy a mid size ford crew cab like a explorer crew cab sport tracker ..for 25-28,000..now none of them make a mid size, just the larger trucks that do 14 miles to the gal...and sell at 30,ooo 5o,ooo.. I been ready to move to Mexico years ago but the wife don't want to ...lol might be going by my self ..smiling ..can buy the truck I want with a diesel engine ..not in this country ...lol its become a third world country here in the past 15 years or it just shows more .. oh well..
    24. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 10 years ago
Wind, how did trucks get in here. I have one & not looking. Have 3 buyers that I have given "1st refusal" to! And this is a bloody '88 (pre computer) that I should poste as an antique. In better shape than most vehicles on this rock that is only 5 yrs old. Just waiting for the style to come back!
    25. Windwalker, 10 years ago
Wind, how did trucks get in here...lol............. I took a left on ya ...smiling..... one would think you don't have any car dealerships on that rock your on ..so your truck is gold in the hand .....as they say
