What is the history of this style of Pick axe?

    The pick is about 28 inches long with a 48 inch handle. The head is a two part assembly. I have never seen this style before and would like to know some background.

      Is there patent info on it?
      Is there a piece missing that once held the pins in place?

      The center peace is cast and marked with PATD or PAT D. There is another mark in the center peace but I can not read it; my wild guess is CALT CO or mabe COLT CO. The pick blade has a stamp ( with metal stamp tool and not cast into the blade) SAN or SANT with the "T" not clear.
      The center and blade are assembled with two rivets so does not look like anything is missing and not designed to be quickly taken apart. The handle is attached with one square head bolt and it looks like there are threads for the bolt in the cast center section so it would not need a nut. Rust makes it difficult to be sure.

      I thought that it was missing a clip as you can see a rectangular area around the two pins that is a different colour.

      The 4 Piece Patented Pick Head is so-so-so close to what I have. The only difference is that the center on mine is cast as a single unit (no split line seen) and the 4 Piece center looks like it is an assembly of two cast parts. Probably from the same manufacturer. This is the first time I have used this site so I may need to figure out how to add another picture.
