i just picked this up for ten dollars and before I do anything to it, I was wondering if anyone had some information on it. It is about three feet or so long and about fifteen inches tall, these are approximate measurements as I did not measure it. Off white fabric lining , brass tacks in the wood or perhaps rivets? I cant find any information on it, did have a couple of remants of old travel stickers but not much remains and all I can tell from that is that at one point it made its way to Amsterdam. Any help would be appreciated, thank you !, Sorry the center picture is so dark, the trunk is worn like in the fist and last photo.
Bit of an odd trunk -- looks like it may be European made -- cross between a trunk and a suitcase. Probably made in the 1920's or so. I cannot tell if the body is made out of metal or vulcanized fiber from the pictures. Those should be brass rivets. Most probably a low to medium grade trunk at the time it was made. Hard to know who would of made it or where without a maker's label. Hope this helps a bit and welcome to Collectors Weekly!
Trunk man is on point (It is a European cabin steamer) I have a trunk with very similar lock hardware. The hardware that you have does not appear to be stamped.Some French trunks will have surete or depose (but not all).
The trunk that I have is stamped P.H. Lehmann Lausanne (Switzerland) the inside is marked with An AuDepart sticker. The flat Steel tacks on the slats are covered with a very thin layer of brass capping. I don't recommend polishing this brass mechanically as you can burn through it easily.Goddard's brass polish and old fashioned elbow grease will make that brass shine.The Brass handle and ribbon weave in the inside do make it a nice find for ten bucks. I have found that the websites: La Malle encoin.com in France. and BelMal.com in Belgium have been awesome sites in helping with identification of european trunks. Thanks for showing it good luck.
Thanks Drill for your further info on this trunk. The cabin steamer of course makes perfect sense in size and type -- also that handle bothered me when I first saw it, No practical value too have an offset handle on the front -- unless of course your have to reach under something to pull it out, like a trunk under a bed on a ship.
