** The Capitol Cake Company was incorporated in 1928 in Baltimore, Maryland. - The bakery prospered for 30 years by selling a full line of cakes to corner stores. In the 1950's, supermarket chains began to have their own bakeries in-store and by 1958, with a dwindling market, the company decided to focus on one product: fruitcake. The first year they made 250,000 fruit cakes and practically went door to door, trying to sell them to retail chains. Since the late seventies, new products have been added to the Capitol Cake line including an all-natural pound cake and a sugar free pound cake. The baking plant is still located in West Baltimore and is one of Baltimore’s oldest established businesses.
