I posted this way back, when I first joined the site. Back then my picture taking skills were average at best, and I really didn't know what to post. I again visited my chair storage space so I grabbed a few to take home.

This chair, I believe, is called a Cromwellian chair. The legs are thick square posts. The front stretcher has a hand carving of pyramids and stars or something. The chair is joined by hand cut notches, half mortises. You can see the back legs, which are arched, were cut with an old hand saw. The rush seat is very loose, and most likely not original. I spotted this chair at a yard sale driving passed at 45 mph. My skills at finding things at yard sales and in the garbage have gotten better. I can now spot at about 60. lol. I think this chair is pretty old, or that it was made by someone who was using older techniques.

Looks like it may have had haunched tenons. Someone went crazy with a drill bit with a countersink and pretty much ended any value it may have had. I am amazed that someone would even attempt to drill into the end grain of a tenon or any other piece of wood. As long as the world and wood have been here it has never worked.

lol! Yeah I was pretty upset about that too. More than anything it is a good piece for me to study. What kind of wood do you think this is fhrjr??

PS I found another Asian piece, smaller, but very similar to the one we were talking about last week. I would like to post it soon. It has the exact same mortise tenon joinery as the other one. It is painted, and in a lighter wood.
