Two Student Desk. Two Drawers with wooden Pulls. Adjustable height for Desk and Seat. Bench Seat. First seen at an Estate Sale in Johnstown NY (last picture where it sat in a nice stately Victorian home). I liked it alot but did not purchase. Several months later I went into a local Antique Store and saw this (first two pictures, not remembering that I had come across it before). I took these pictures but found a picture of when I first saw one of this type and noticed the Desks were one and the same. I do own it.
Wow. Looks small.....kids were skinnier then!
It does look small in the pictures but its larger than the antique single Desks you come across today. It's really the perfect Computer Desk.
I remember double desks but not like this one. Quite a different design.
Love it!
I really wonder where you ever saw a desk like this? I would like to see a site that shows them and the history behind them. The entire design defies everything I have seen so I would love to see more about this one. I collected a number of them over the years when I lived in New England.
Patent for the adjustable legs on Desk is http://www.google.com/patents/US598674
I had no doubt about the hardware. I never happened to see a double desk with a front shelf, let alone a shelf mounted directly over ink wells. I have seen them with two ink wells, both at the right hand position of the student or one ink well centered between the two. I never happened to see one with a shelf over the ink well or a shelf at all on a school desk. I would be interested in learning more about this desk. I seriously question this being original but if it I would like background information that can be verified. I love old school desks.
Did you see the desk I just posted? Bought it yesterday...I have been trying to find more about it....let me know if you find ant good sources! Thanks.
I have a similar desk, the iron legs are larger, contain company letters, the upper shelf was a hollow rectangle that the prior owner filled in. It has two inkwells, with brass lids and glass insets, the identical desk is on here as a mystery desk from three years ago. I've seen two other incomplete desks of the same make. They're high school/adult sized. They have a foot rest, inner tray and a slot for sliding in papers. I love it. Repaired and refinished it and use it every day.
