I happened to get my hands on this nice 1909-S VDB Licoln Wheat Penny. What would you grade this coin? And the value?

This is the kind of coin that needs to be professionally graded - invest the money for a PCGS grading and slab - you can't go wrong and that will insure that you get fair market value. - Love seeing a scarce "real" coin posted here, finally :)
So, I guess cleaning it "gently" with Vaseline would be out of question?
I wouldn't clean it ...with that said, I use ketchup to clean metal things ...just take a old penny or silver ring put it on a plate and put some ketchup on it .,,rinse it off in five mins and bang ..lol ....like new
Roycro, clean coins with Ketchup? What else can you clean with it? I am having second thoughts about eating it now.
I have a 1909 VDB but its missing the S, should I throw it out?
what can I tell ya ^^^ sarge....that's what the wife uses on all her jewelry she make ... copper ,silver brass ,, and the inside of my tummy ...smiling...as far as the coin goes,.. spend it ...lol .................just kidding I know nothing about coins...
NEVER clean a coin - with anything
Bigsarge - a 1909 VDB without the S mintmark is still worth $10-12 even in "good" condition - whether you want to throw it out is up to you.
Re: Ketchup - it is the acidity in the ketchup that takes off tarnish, so your just diminishing the value of your items - removing patina is removing value.
My dad was a chemist so I have never had store bought ketchup in my entire life, the only ketchup we ever had in our house was home-made. - just keep this in mind, if it cleans tarnish off metal, can you imagine what it does to your innards?
LOL thanks agh just like poring coke on battery terminals to clean of the acid, I question the chemicals the government allows to be put in our food, beverage and water supply. I read that other countries will not allow some of the foods we eat to get into their Country yet the US government has no problem letting us consume it.

That is one of the holes in my 1909 - 1940 penny collection. This is a very valuable coin. I would guess about $600 could be more. Not sure if the lines are visable on the wheat ears or not. Could be $1000. Looks like that hole will still be there (I put a regular 1909 S in the spot.
Aghcollect is correct. Don't even think about cleaning a coin.
fortapache - I'm missing this key date too - even in the lowest G4 grade this lists at around $850 - he should really get this PCGS because the date, mintmark, and VDB are all very clear - there is very little wear on this coin as shown and is surely close to at least the VG / Fine - every grade better adds another $100 to the value.
Thanks everyone who commented about this coin. I guess cleaning is out of question. I kinda knew that you are not supposed to clean silver coins but I guess it goes for all kinds of coins. I will definitely send it to be graded. Should I take it to a local dealer, here in Dallas or open a membership account at PCGS?
Some dealers have PCGS accounts and will charge you a percentage of the actual value to get it graded for you - I believe you are better off just going direct to PCGS without the middle-man. I think their initial fee is still under or around $40, the same it would cost to open an account. - Check their website, they give you all the information including how to safely submit your coin to them. - Good luck and please update the post later with the graded "slabbed" coin.

Yes, I've been to PCGS website and just about to open an account. Their Gold Membership has complimentary 4 grading and costs $129 for one year but I have to submit all 4 at once. I'm picking the best 4 of my collection and my 1800 Bust Dollar is not gonna be on that list.
I've got several wheat pennies and only one or two in that good of shape. Hold on to it for a few years.
