My nephew bought a farm last year with an orchard in Western Wisconsin. I helped with a cattle drive when I visited a few wks ago. It is a really nice 100 year old farmhouse w/out buildings. He threw the hinges on the ground all together in the machine shed. He is a real farmer - not a gentleman farmer so just last week he emailed me that he already cleaned up the machine shed and gathered all these up. What? Why? But he said he kept them.

Thank you Amber, agh, mike, Peter, Kyra and Sean!

Sean I hoped I could get up to Appleton but it proved to be a East to West road trip. I found a few goodies and in particular a very strange and wonderful junk store in Madison: Treasure Chest run "as a consignment store". Large warehouse, completely full owned by the 90 yr old mama and her 60-ish? daughter. Based on when the item came into the store discounts applied. I kept telling them "I don't mind paying $1.00 for this nice lidded celluloid dresser box and .25 for the printed hanky". Oh no - I think both ended up being .70 after the discounts. I also found a reasonably priced antique store: Retro-Revolution in Madison. They had lots of wonderful mid-century. I spent some $$$ there.

Oh I love the farm being turned back to a working farm ! In Wi here also . I had a Farm In Tomah . Where in Wi did he buy the farm ? You were close to my Son's town if you were in Madison .

Hi Mani - he's near Richland Center/Hillsboro. Even w/directions I got lost going to his place. I'll post my sister's photos of his amazing farm because my pix were crappy. It is gorgeous! I loved Madison too. I found 2 Frank Lloyd Wright homes and the convention center. AND in RC - the FLW German warehouse. I'll post that later.

My nephew is an organic farmer - but nothing froo froo. It was hard work visiting there! I loved it....

Have a good friend in Richland Center . It is not that close to Madison so you did a bit of traveling :-) It is nice area . Are you in Wi also ? My son was direct east of you in Beaver Dam .

He kept the hinges for the same reason the last guy did. They are worth nothing but scrap price but they are also expensive to buy new if you have old that will work. That "T" hinge in the center looks like 6 or 8" I just bought 10" ones that cost $30 each. I would say he will do fine farming. He knows what to save that will come in handy. As for the hens, eggs are good as long as she lays them.....then chicken stew with dumplings tastes pretty good.

No I live in California. This was a road trip vacation. I have 3 sisters and we try to get together once a year. I had more vacation then they did so I flew into Milwaukee - GREAT museums then after 2 days drove to Madison. and then further. I stupidly thought I could do a circle road trip of the state in 8 way!

Thanks fhrjr2....I think they were called blue Iowa chickens. I can't remember. I haven't been on a farm in 30 yrs and I didn't write anything down. Yes I agree he kept the hinges to use later - thrown on the ground and put in drawer later. We all wondered what that last window was for.

LOL I was from Ca San Diego and moved to Wi . How fun :-) I am close to Milwaukee and glad you got to see our Museums , I could have got you a private tour of the Pabst Mansion . It is wonderful and full of antiques .

I went to the Milwaukee Public Museum (my favorite) the Fine Arts Museum, Grohmann Men at Work (Fab!) St. Joan of Arc Chapel at Marquette University and St. Josephat basillica. PLUS there was an Italian festival and a micro-brew festival downtown...I didn't go to those but the restuarants around downtown Milwaukee were delicious and had some great beer.

I wanted to do the Pabst Mansion but I ran out of time. I had a day and some and then drove on to Madisson. Because 94 fwy was under construction I drove thru more neighborhoods and stopped at 2 garage sales... I loved my visit.

You drove within a few miles of my house :-)

Valentino - The last picture looks like a release door for pigeons. Was there lots of bird droppings around it? They will use a large door but a smaller one seems to be their preference as it is more difficult for a predator to get in. Might also have been for Quail. Quail eggs are becoming popular again right now but they aren't easy to raise. A friend just brought me a jar of pickled quail eggs. I won't say where they ended up but lets say they don't appeal to me.

fhr I know where pickled any kind of eggs would go here ! And no one needs to send me any lol
But I would like a live chicken in backyard :-)

Mani if you will settle for a chick rather than a chicken I will send my wife right away. Please be aware she will arrive C.O.D. plus shipping costs and a nominal handling charge. Also be aware that with this item RETURNS ARE NOT ALLOWED. Order now and I will throw in a used dress absolutely FREE! Don't wait...act now. This is a limited time offer. Our operators are NOT standing by, we let them sit down. Actually you may want to let the phone ring I think they are sleeping right now.

Hi fhrjr2 - The window is in a pile of other glass storm windows, but I think you are right that it was a critter door. None of the windows in that pile fit any of the buildings on the farm! Typical I guess of a place that is 100 yrs old. I love your pickled egg story. Did they end up in the compost pile? And wow that you are willing to part w/your chick! Sounds like something my boyfriend would say...

Manikin I noted your email address and will send you a gossipy message later. I would LOVE to have a chicken in my backyard! (Actually a neighbor friend DOES. It can happen even in a big city.) My niece in Madison is building a custom coop/flower box combo as we speak.

We had Chickens in Spain, the problem is you tend to get rats were there are chickens, there after the food. They aren't big here, there fruit Rats, about the size of a large mouse, but a rat is a rat. I won't be getting more chickens.
    17. fhrjr2 fhrjr2, 7 years ago
We have fruit rats here in Florida all year long. Our orange trees attract them out back. I use Tom Kat rat bait and my BB gun to control them. Can't fire anything but a BB gun in the city unless you are standing your ground. I reserve my big dog, big gun and bad attitude for standing my ground.

My dogs couldn't careless useless. I did have one dog who was a killing machine Tarbu, I just didn't like her killing them I was always afraid that some body might have put poison down.

Peasejean55 - rats but I deal w/cockroaches the size of figs. I think those are called palmetto bugs? I don't like rats or mice either. I love chickens and birds in general. I'm the weird bird lady. Or fowl lady - or a foul lady some of my relatives will agree.
    21. Peasejean55 Peasejean55, 7 years ago
I agree with you I'm not a lover of Cockroaches. I remember in Bangkok when it was monsoon season they were everywhere, and they fly, I would run around like screaming Banshee.
    22. valentino97 valentino97, 7 years ago
And to fhrjr2 - I lived in Hollywood Florida and I REMEMBER the "stand your ground" gun law. But, I never had to shoot the critters and I wasn't a drug addict so no other problems that way. BUT, many horrible palmetto bugs stories I could share. This isn't the place so I won't.
