Thought I'd share my pair of Fostoria 'American' cake stands. These are some of the older versions made with glass containing manganese; the first image is an attempt to show how the cube motif can show up under black light. Both of the have the pedestal and plateau joined with a glass wafer and each has the 'rum well'; each is very heavy thick glass. Fostoria introduced the 'American' pattern in 1915 and continued production until the 1983 purchase of their factory by Lancaster Colony. Lancaster Colony continued making some forms of the American pattern until 1998. The round stands are currently being reproduced in lead crystal by Godinger, and called 'Radiance'. 2016 Update: Mosser Glass introduced a punch set including bowl, stand, under-plate and cups in the 'American' pattern but have named it "Katherine"...

    OMN: American
    AKA: Zig Zag Block; Cube
    YOP: 1915
    MFG: Fostoria Glass Co.
SIZE: 10" square or diameter x 7" high
Look-Alike Patterns: 'Cube' by Jeannette Glass; 'Whitehall' by Indiana Glass; 'Service Libela' by Libochovice

thanks WP... : ) yes, the square one does have a more commanding presence. Both are very thick and heavy glass; square weighs 6.26 lbs. and round just over 5 lbs. And I use a small black light for photos only; these are kept on a high shelf out of the sun or any UV light.

Simply Amazing!!! I'm not a baker, I either burn it or don't cook it enough, so when I saw "rum well" I looked it up and it's just what it sounds like...Interesting and something I would have never known. Thanks.

thanks sur... I too am a baker; these days mostly b'day cakes for family and friends. Made my special carrot cake for sis last week. There term 'rum well' as it pertains to cake stands is one that no one really knows where it came from as it isn't noted in any of the old catalogs. Thought is that the depression was part of the design to accommodate heat dissipation when joining the stem and plateau; but really no one knows for sure. However, some old timers did use liquor (whiskey or rum, or whatever) to help keep their cakes moist. My MIL always kept a jigger of Jack Daniels under the dome with her jam cakes.

Lol...you're right, of course. What I read did say that the rum well was used to keep the cakes moist before saran wrap came out...But what I just realized as I wrote that was, wasn't that what they made the covers for??? I think maybe the bakers just liked the whiskey :) (wanted to make sure I wrote my comment correctly; I'm not one that bakes) Wish I could, I love fresh baked anything! Carrot Cake YUM!

My mom's the one who taught me baking and I've been doing it ever since. I like trying new ideas and tweaking recipes to make them my own.

TallCakes, You have this too!!! And my Mother taught me to Bake and I tweak them too, I love baking. I can not wait till my Slaver arrives from AZ I bought it from a shop while I was on vacation. My friend shipping it, said "no it does not have the star center". The photo I posted was an image I found on the internet. Is that center star pattern from a specific era? I was looking for an image to send to my Mother. That is how I found CW and another Cake Slaver Fan. I can not wait to take Pics of my other slavers and post them. :-D
      Bella.

Welcome to CW Bella. Maybe it's just the optics in the photo that causes the appearance of a star; I've not seen one with anything that that in the center of the plate before. Look forward to seeing more posts from you : )

just learned that Mosser Glass has introduced a punch set in the 'American' pattern and have named their pattern "Katherine"... so now this pattern is in production for over 100 years.

I am honored to have such a beautiful pattern named after me! Ha ha! TallCakes, these are beautiful, I had not seen them before, and I thought I'd seen all your threads, will have to look again. By the way, last I remember, you were about to paint and re-arrange all your beautiful plates, we never saw the end result. Did everything go according to plan?

I have, what looks like, an American Fostoria round cake stand but it does not have a rum well. Is it a fake?
    32. TallCakes TallCakes, 3 years ago
it's likely just a later production. Fostoria made them for many years up to their closing in 1986.
