I have come across this unusual maul. I have no idea what it is used for. It weighs about 22 pounds. Any help would be appreciated.

At 22 pounds, it is hard for me to imagine this thing was used like a hammer. Of course, I used to be a lot stronger a few decades ago. Seems like everything is getting heavier than it used to be. :-)

I've tried to do my own research but I can't find anything close. There are no marks except for a "No 1" stamped in the side of the steel. Can't imagine how heavy the "No 2" wound have been.

i understand what your saying about the weight of it and being used like a hammer it would be back breaking work looking at pic n03 with the 3 screw heads being used like wedges to hold the handle in place makes me think that its not the original handle but was replaced at some time by a axe handle that is on it now, if that being the case maybe the original handle was just for holding it steady while being used like a anvil

I thought the same thing about the handle when I saw the screws. Now, I'm not so sure. It may not be the original handle but the hole in the iron is shaped for an axe-like handle.

I looked to see if the head was used for an anvil but there are no signs of it being struck with another hammer. And, the head is round.

I have removed the red paint and the steel is nearly black with reminents of a gold/copper color blended into the iron.

A local museum tells me this is an assayer's maul. It is used in a rocking/sliding manner to crush ore samples for assaying.
