my second gallé majolica, just got few days ago, figuring a scenic view of sea and ships. the ashtray remind the design of basketwork.

Close connections with Lorraine manufactures Its interest for ceramics
is indissociable precursory role held by his/her Charles father. Painter
on porcelain of formation, Charles Galle becomes an advised ceramics trader and glassmakings. After its marriage with Fanny Reinemer, it takes again the store of porcelains and crystals of his mother-in-law, Marguerite Reinemer. Its experiment enables him to extend its activities which remain however limited to the sale of products manufactured in subcontracting by the manufacture of Saint-Clement until 1876, date on which Charles Galle collaborates with the Vosgean refractory ground manufacture located at Raon-L' Stage and pertaining to Adelphe Muller. Galle have there a furnace and a workshop of decoration for
ceramics until 1898. The places of production are not limited
to these two centers. In 1873, at the time of the installation of the family Galle avenue of Garenne, a workshop of decoration for ceramics is created. To all that are added temporary places of manufacture, as the manufacture of Claire-Fountaine (Haute-Saône) and the faience manufacture of Choisy-le-roi. It is only in 1885, whereas Emile Galle took the succession of his father, that is built a furnace and a new workshop of decoration street of Garenne. Galle becomes manufacturer
with whole share then, which enables him to answer the payments
great exposures which grant their rewards only to the only manufacturers. The ceramic production of Galle It is practically impossible to draw a complete picture of the ceramic production of Emile Galle, so much the forms and the decorations are varied
and finally unclassable. Galle directs especially his research in
stanniferous earthenware, the sets of table linen and “imagination”, the latter having incipient from the taste of the time for the curios.
Contrary to his/her father, at the beginning painter out of porcelain, Galle was never interested in this material. On the other hand, it carries a keen interest to the sandstone, material with the mode in the middle
of the years 1880. Beautiful parts, qualified “artistic sandstone kind”
are presented at the World Fair of 1889. The furnaces of Galle not reaching the high temperatures necessary to the cooking of this material, its sandstones are actually effects of sandstones obtained on pastes with fine earthenware. Thus, Emile Galle produces primarily stanniferous earthenware decorated with enamel with various colors. In the years 1884-1889, it multiplies the technical experiments, applying those of glass to ceramics: the point of the engraver on glass, used on the soft ground or the terra cotta, makes it possible to draw contours of the compositions; the hydrofluoric acid patinates the ornaments;
the grinding stone or the wheel starts enamel to reveal the reasons and
the figures. At the end of the years 1890, Galle is however constrained to give up his trade of ceramist because of a certain disaffection of
the public for ceramics.
