Just to be clear, I'm not an advocate of running around with a net to catch butterflies and sticking a pin through them, but these were already dead & mounted and for $2 I thought I might be able to do something interesting with them inside a glass bell jar I had salvaged from a broken Anniversary clock.

These came from the same yard sale as the green butter dish in another of my postings, and given the surprising date and value on that find I figured maybe I would get lucky twice!

Other than the iconic Monarch butterfly I am not familiar at all with Lepidoptera insects, so I have no idea what I have here. I think the middle one might be a moth?

They seem to be in excellent preserved condition, although I haven't unstuck them from the bottom of the box in order to look at the undersides. The wingspan on the 1st one is 3.5"; the 2nd is 2.25"; and the third is 3.25". Where are they from? What are their names? Are they rare or are they common?

Looks to be pair of swallowtails, could be from just about anywhere but probably the US. Not sure what the middle one is.

Thanks for the information. I guess it's time to visit some butterfly identification websites.
