      It's a very early scent or perfume bottle called a Chatelain. Yours is a custom made piece, the initials may be the owners, but if they are the maker and you can ID the maker, it's value increases a bit.

      thanks yardsaledave for your comment, but I dought very much this would hold
      a liquid. It has threads on both ends make of wood and is not tight.
      We had thought it could be a snuff container or a gun powder container for a
      small dulling pistol.

      There were round powder flasks dating back to the matchlock days, but even then there was some kind of thumb mechanism to allow the powder to pour out.
      You might be closer with the snuff theory. Could just as well held some kind of medication.
