I found this a while back and I still have no clue what it is. My guess is that it once hung on a fence or was fixed to a wall. I came to this conclusion based on the mounting holes found up and down the item. The metal is non ferrous. There is 0 rust found. The patina is a brown to olive green color with the olive color be more visible in cracks and crevices. I took a dremel buffer to a small area on the back and the metal comes out a goldish color but has more of a copper tone to it vs a gold color as in brass.
There are some round markings on the back side of the axe blade but they mean nothing to me and I can barely make them out. There is a small round tab near the bottom that has 1914 on it. The font is really neat and looks like a font you'd see on something gothic. The item measures just shy of 34 inches long. It actually looks like the same font they use on the Haunted Mansion ride at Disney. At any rate, I would love some other input as I am lost on determining where this came from and what it was used for. Cheers.
I took it somewhere locally and they told me that it was from a style in the 60s that was popular that included many medieval looking items that people hung on their wall. My brain tells me that based on the appearance of the metal and the patina, this is way off.
No solid information here, but I agree it isn't 1960s kitsch. There's no reason that stuff would be marked 1914, and this thing seems made better. If more coppery than brassy, perhaps this is bronze?
Here is a possibility I thought of: This is a piece of bronze from a large memorial of some sort. Your piece may have been mounted sideways above an inscription or list of names, and there may have been a similar piece mounted beneath it but with "1918" on it instead, making it a WWI memorial.
Of course this is more imagination than fact, but it's plausible.

PS: There is high scrap metal value in Bronze, being mostly copper.
Sadly the WWI memorial in my town had all the bronze plaques ripped off of it one night by thieves. The plaques have since been replaced with duplicates of the originals made of a bronze colored plastic resin. The idea being that if thieves break off a piece they will know the plaques aren't metal. In the meantime, knowing that the plaques are not the originals makes me sad each time I visit.
No telling where it is from. I like how they reclassified this into tools and hardware, since it is neither of the two.
