    trunkman
    (148 items)

I got this trunk for a song... well actually the guy who sold it to me was a musician and he made me a cup of coffee and sang me one of his songs... what a treat! Fantastic trunk road trip today -- one hour and half into the country to pick this up at an old farm. I just love the hardware on it -- unique to me. Nice leather covered with two top patches missing.... may borrow from the back for the top. I like to save the leather on these if I can even though I love the wood look when they are done. Look at the size of the lock -- its huge... patent date 1880 on it. I define a bride's trunks as the ones that have these thick heavy side guides on the two lid corners. Trunk people help me out on this. This is going to look soooo nice when its finished... Christmas all over... Now I have to find a good place to hide it... uh I mean display it.

Love the trunk. You definitely live in a different part of the country. I have been searching for something like this for over a month, within a four hour drive. Great find, thanks for sharing.

Great trunk! I really like the metal work around the lock.
A word (or several, you know me!) about "brides trunks" A bride or brides trunk is only a name many people use to describe a trunk that they believe to be very ornate. First off, there is no criteria for a brides trunk. There is nothing exclusive to a brides trunk that is not found in other trunks. There are many on eBay that throw this name around for every trunk they sell. Yes, I do have a few catalog references to trunks being named a brides, bride, or bridal trunk. Yes these trunks were the top of the food chain on the exterior, but no more than many other trunks of the time. The big difference (I firmly believe) lies in the interior. A brides trunk had a VERY ornate interior with many compartments, elaborate trim, latches, and expensive materials. Her are 2 different trunk companies from the 1880's description of their brides or bridal trunks.
      1. "This elegant and durable trunk will at once command itself to the admiration of seekers after a first class article, it being finished with all the latest improved fastenings and catches, the interior finish being of the best quality ad workmanship. leather or Zinc covered."
      2. " In an extra full size box, covered with cowhide leather, staves made of basswood, has five slats on top, two on back, front and end of body. The slats are tipped with imported metal. Has slat protectors and clamped with malleable iron, wide iron on edges with double row of nails, three centre bands are covered with malleable tinned scalloped irons, large lock, patent bolts, and the best corner rollers, also our own and the only original combination clamp.
The inside contains a top tray, glove, parasol and movable hat case, also a webbed skeleton tray, is full Muslin lined, as handsome and durable as a trunk can be made."

Thanks Jim -- I was hoping to get some clarification on the matter. As the interior of this is gutted it remains a great trunk! I won't even ask about Saratoga.... :).
