      Looks to me like it was made to haul on top of a stage coach maybe an old box that they shipped gold with? Rifles maybe not sure

      Yes CindB....it is carved from one piece of wood.....it is an awesome piece of work.

      More questions ,than answers,thats always a good starting point to the truth .Ok ,so why was it carved from a single peice of wood? Why does the top have square pegs? Is it to possibly stabilize the lumber from cracking. What type of wood has a trunk of great size been carved from Hard or soft? Mahogany,Teak, Camphor etc. Who would be doing that and in what time period? Is that the mark of a rotating saw blade cutting lumber under the lid?
      Would the angled sides make it easier to carry from the handles,lets say one man in front one in the back? Could it have stored food/grain goods? Time to search/surf for comparable items (my idea of a good time) I'll be back .

      I can't seem to find a comparable item.I did search for quite some time ,very unique trunk, I searched under multiple categories too.
      Thanks for the post .Check back from time to time as there are a few of us that do
      research items and I may see one a year from now .That's kind of how things work
      on these old items.Good luck nice piece.
