Would love for someone to tell me any information about this antique rocker I purchased from a friend who bought it several years ago at an estate sale. I would love to know possible worth & age especially. The headrest is padded fuller at the top. The seat is heavily padded with hay & some other material under the bottom and has springs. Both headreast and seat are covered in leather with what looks like tacks securing it. The wood looks to be oak and has carved fingers on the arms & carved wood you can see on the back. There is one spindle missing on the back right if you are facing the chair. However, the chair is very sturdy and rocks perfect. I do not see any markings on the chair. The seat measures 21 1/2" from side to side x 19" deep. The seat is kind of squatty to the floor only being about 16" from the floor. The overall height is 38". The headrest measures 15 3/4 at its widest point.
The leather is quite dirty. I am wondering how to clean it also.
Also after closer investigation, I see that this chair is put together with wood dowels and is indeed stuffed with hay straw because it is hollow & has the seedlings on some pieces. There would possibly be a marking underneath the front of the seat. It might be a very crude "M" or "W" scratched, through it is worn.
I had this chair appraised through online appraisal and was told it is a Victorian 1890's - 1900 unique rocking chair. It has been cleaned up and is simply stunning now just from getting the years of grime off.
