    British WWII Air raid wooden hand rattle, 1939. Owned by George Anderson of the North Queensferry ARP, Edinburgh Scotland.
    Second World War period British Air Raid Precautions (ARP) warden's 'all clear' hand bell. If a gas attack was suspected warning was given locally by means of the ARP warden's hand rattle and the all clear was announced through the ringing of hand bells.

      Nice! Don't find these marked very often.

      They make an unbelievable noise!

      The same style has been used since the 19th century as fire alarms as well as gas alarms during WW1.

      "Battle rattle" is what I've always heard them called. Commonly used by the navy during boarding's in combat. Guess they scared or confused the enemy because many were made. Doesn't seem many survived the test of time. Not exactly what people would save. "What did you do during the battles, daddy?". "I wielded a battle rattle".

      I do remember the time that Football fans had rattles. I also know of Police Forces using them along with their whistles.
