Here is a recent bakelite purchase - nice 5/8" marbled ear clips in a pretty orange color that reminded me of Atticus Finch (because lawyers had lambchop sideburns) and Whitey Bulger (because he was a fast flyin bird on the run). It's hard to get pictures of these sweethearts but it was cage cleanin night....sorry guys - I know it's stressful being so tiny.

I found the earclips for $2 and they are small enough to wear. I have a bracelet similar but not exact match.

The finches were a birthday present and so small they are not allowed out of their cage except in the bathroom on cleanin night.

They almost look edible! Love the colour.

Are your finches Australian? I love these little birds.

Karen - thanks - these are society finches. I believe they are both males. Atticus has the prettiest song. They aren't loud but they are messy so I have to do a major cage clean once a month. Atticus Finch is the famous lawyer dad from "To Kill A Mockingbird". And Whitey Bulger is a mob rat who was on the lamb in California for 16 years. I hope I don't offend any friends or families of those 2 for naming my little guys after them. :) I am not sure if they are society or zebra finches and I need to do some more research.

Is Whitey always trying to escape?Trying to beat the rap?lol
    9. valentino97 valentino97, 6 years ago
Yes gargoyle - when I first met this Whitey he had a look of pure disdain for me in his little beady eyes. And that was true for Whitey (James) Bulger too. He didn't think he would get caught.

nutsabotas, I have a pair of earrings exactly like this that I thought were glass, thanks to this thread I am now going to test them and see what they are, lol. :)

      Lovely earrings, lovely birds. :)

Ken - if you can take a little simichrome w/a wht scrap of t-shirt w/you and rub it on the item - often the change will be yellow. Not always but 80% accurate. Harder to use on black and red. Bakelite is a little hard to compare against Lucite from the 1950's on. Many good costume jewelry companies were trying to duplicate the old 20,30,40,50's plastics but in the 60's and 70's - quality changed - plastic used in Avon or Trifari or Sarah Cov were thin thermoplastic. Still great but just different.

Ken - simichrome is a German metal polish that comes in a tube. I bought mine on ebay. It lasts a long time! Became popular with restorations on bakelite radios. No it wipes away clean with no residue. Like any paste it can get stuck in the nooks and crannies of your item. It's well worth the $8.00

I tested mine, they were not bakelite. Sad trombone.
