I bought this as it reminded me of one we had at on the farm back in the 1960's era, and used for a Candy Dish. So I just assumed this might be that era. Marked with a Logo on JAPAN on the bottom. Have not found that mark yet ( I thought it might be GIFT CRAFT ) but have not found any info to confirm it. Just plastic, or something else?
Any info on this will help greatly!! I bought only becasue it reminded me of ours years ago. That is the Good part of being Old -- you remember all these things you grew up with......LOL

No idea who made it, but you may be able to tell if it's wood by looking closely for signs of grain under the layers of lacquer. If there is none, and it feels light, you're probably looking at plastic.
As to the symbolism -- the iris is commonly associated in Japan with the month of May, which is when it is at its peak. In fact, Boys' Day (Tango no Sekku) is the fifth day of the fifth month, and irises are one of the symbols of that day. Children are said to play with iris leaves as "swords", and there is a type of iris that was traditionally cut and soaked in bath water to make a pleasant scent (and, IIRC, believed to give vitality). So this "feminine" iris -- as we'd think of it in the west -- is in fact masculine!
Anyway, just a tidbit on the design. And I do think this was originally intended for candies or other nibbles!
