Another in my series of photos I took but never posted. Also another where I try and give the entire description in the title line.
Sappers generally dug tunnels to enemy fortifications which would be filled with explosives. But some say any combat engineer would be considered a sapper.
The liner is mostly intact just missing the connectors that go inside the top.
This is the model M 15 made beginning in 1915. Should I be mistaken I am happy to amend my description.

I have only handled 1 of these a real long time ago. As I remember, the metal was rather thin compared to Brit. German & some others. Is my memory correct?
I think you may be right blunderbuss. It does seem fairly thin and gets dents you wouldn't see on the German, British and American Helmets.

Actually, the Amer. helmet shells were pretty thin. That's why I didn't mention them before. Of course none of them back then would take perpendicular shot from a .30 cal. or 8 m/m. They seemed more for deflecting shallow angle shots & falling things. Then of course, you can't load down a guy with a 5 lb. helmet on top of 70-90 lbs of gear. LOL
My American helmet is a WWII Civil defense helmet that is the WWI style. Probably wasn't made in WWI but it my only thing for comparison. And yep just for falling pieces of stuff kicked up by an artillery shell.
An actual bulletproof metal (or really resistant) helmet would be just a tad heavy.

the French Mle15 looks sharp on the parade ground, but it's probably the thinnest lightest steel helmet ever made, not much stronger than a tin can and dents easily, Im surprised the military would ever adopt such a fragile designed steel combat helmet? I would feel more comfortable with a US M1917 Doughboy helmet, but it's still a very interesting helmet for collecting and looks nice on display.
