I am very excited to share this vase with you - it just arrived today, and I took pictures of it as soon as I could. It is an enameled basalt hyalith glass vase in the shape of a book, made by Harrach. I have never seen another vase like it, so think it must be a pretty unusual piece. I am guessing that it dates to about 1880 or so. The 'book' measures 5.5" tall x 2.75" wide by just over 1" thick, and has beautiful beveled edges and carved 'pages' of paper, highlighted in gilt. The enameling on both sides is in excellent condition, and features forget-me-nots. (I have seen this same pattern of enamel on another Harrach vase, so it must be from one of their pattern books.) It appears that there was once additional gilding on the spine, so I have to wonder if it once said something - perhaps the name of the book? Anyway, I am thrilled to be able to show this vase to you. :)

Very unusual and atractive. Perhaps it says forget me not, because of the flowers, a present to be remember

kivatinitz, that is a very good idea - it certainly could have been that! Thanks! :)
