My Uncle was a Chief Engineer for Alcoa Steam Ship Co. and traveled the world. They had Japanese wood carvings, grandfather clocks from Germany among other items they acquired through their travels and where they lived. I always had my eye on this bowl ever since I was a child. My aunt use to tell me she bought it over 30 yrs. back and that was 30 yrs ago. She claimed she tried to get different scholars to determine the stamp or symbol on the back and no one could. She always would tell me even the Chinese scholars she took it too would tell her it was from a lost language they did not use from 300 yrs. back and it was a great story for a child. Now I own it and I have seen what so many people call Chargers and most are small. This bowl is close to 22 1/2 " across. About 2 5/8" deep so it is a big bowl but I see all these different ones that show 3 or 4 symbols on them and this has only one and wonder if anyone knows anything of it??
Nice Charger a charger can range in size from 12" to over 24' Yours is a Nice Japanese Imari Polychrome Charger Looks like it has the Hizen Ware Fuku Mark Looks really close to it anyways. Made for Export 1870's date range would be close guess. I have one but its not that big only around 18" dates from 1870 for $20 at a local sale. But hard to display due to the size and weight. You can have them recessed into a table That looks nice from ones I have seen.
I don't have a good camera so the pics were from my phone. Even though it doesn't take the best of pictures it is still a little hard to see it even in person with your own eyes. I know the market is whatever you can find someone to pay for what you are selling, I had some people here in my home area that held an antique pricing day and gave it a value if around $800. Seems I have seen smaller with less detail for more than that but I guess if you are not wanting to sell it, it is priceless. I thought about making a deep enough shadow box and lining it with felt and cushioning to keep it safer. I have it out on a table now as my Aunt displayed it but anytime I have a grandchild over I go crazy that something might happen. Thought of hanging it in the frame but would have to make a very sturdy and well thought out frame, wire and stud to hang it on so laying it on the table would work but want it better protected. It does weigh around 13 lbs. I guess it is the fact that my Aunt and Uncle actually purchased this overseas themselves and brought it back. I also have a captains desk from one of the ships he was in at the time. Very beautiful.
The price seems a little low from others I have seen that are that size but it depends on how knowledgeable the person was on oriental antique market. Hanging them on the wall is possible but I would not want to take the risk due to the weight. Even with the camera phone it still looks nice.
I know. I would have to make sure it was on studs but I have thought about making a box to protect it. I love being able to handle it and show it to others but then again, it doesn't get shown a lot. My Aunt had it on a shelf that was under her living room table so it had cover. I guess when you have something that is of course, irreplaceable, you want to make sure it doesn't ever get broken especially when it might have been handed down. I wish I had her Japanese wood carvings but her 2 kids sold them off. They had no desire for the keepsakes, just the money. Thanks. I would love to find someone that was more knowledgeable on these particular but them again, it is only as valuable as the buyer thinks it is, then again, I don't think I would ever sell it. They are very beautiful in their design and color and workmanship.
