Tsugaru Vidro is one of Japan's larger art glass makers, based in the Aomori prefecture in the far north of Honshu. Glass from this region is recognisable by it's style and is often identified as northern glass.

It is generally glass with quite busy yet delicate decor, and generally will have some sort of surface finish or additions such as handles.

This vase started with a red base, to which has been added green, white, blue and black. Gold sheet has been laid on some parts and the vase has been clear cased. A final flourish has been added with clear little scroll handles.

Tsugaru Vidro glass is often tagged as Tsugaru beauty idro by the Japanese, and their work is often incredibly beautiful.

This vase is actually rather gorgeous, and despite it's 27cm height feels small and unobtrusive.

      This is another great piece!
This is really interesting for me that Japanese glass in general looks similarly to European but has SOMETHING...I even can't define what IT is.It's so elusive, so your posts are helpful in catching a likeness and difference.

Glad you like it Kevin and thanks.

I know what you mean Ivonne. I see vases from Europe of similar shape and even decor but they don't look Japanese. There is a style all theirs, and it is often about their juxtaposition of colours and combinations of size, style and colour. Thanks for the great comment.

Oh such a gorgeous glass vase, wow. As to the European/Japanese decor, I have to say the Japanese pieces are far more appealing to me, they are freer, simpler in a good way, and have more expression. :)

Anne, I am as greedy as the next and want want want here on CW! Thank heavens I have budget restrictions. Thanks.

      Thanks again Rick!

Katherine thanks for the comment. That freedom that you speak of is what got me into Japanese glass....I'm glad you get it too! I love any glass but when the Japanese get inventive they just let go, but maintain discipline of technique.
      It's an interesting dichotomy.
