This old chest belonged to my grandfather's moving and storage company in Highland Park, Il. I was told that they used these before the advent of cardboard boxes for packing china and like items. I tried searching for the manufacturer out of Indiana, but to no avail. I was wondering if you could tell me approximately how old it was and what its' worth might be. The only thing that I can see missing is the rope handles on the sides that were used to lift the chest.

I had one of these but it had advertising for a wholesale grocery supply co.out of Denver. They would fill the orders for small rural General stores and send them out in these.

Try checking with whatever local level historical organization would cover Peru, Indiana - like a county historical society. They may be able to help. I like this a lot!
