You were right Mr Trunkman, the Tung oil really made a difference, you can just about make out the "to" in between the numbers now, Thank you for the good advice, i am leaving the inside completely as it is, including the toilet chain, as crude as it is it serves a good purpose....
Im going to send pictures of the box and the newspaper to the museums here that cover the Princess Alice, I don't think the box is anything to do with the boat but they may be able to tell me if the box was once at sea, or if its older than the newspaper at the bottom.....
I have included another pic from the paper....the text above The Inquest,
at first i laughed but was then very sad at the end, you will hopefully know what i mean......
The key is quite sweet, rather rusty and the hoop is slightly bent but she still works, I'm not to sure about the brass plate surrounding the key hole, do you think this could have been added at a later date?
If i find out more i will be sure to let you know..........
I hope you like it xx

WOW -- what a fabulous look!! Having the key is so rare and awesome -- and the story of the sinking of the ship -- a real mystery as is the numbers on the front -- a total package of a great find!! I would think that the key hole cover is original... there are no holes to indicate replacement and it looks about right for time period.... (it will shine up nice if it is brass with fine steel wool if you like). So glad you like the look with the tung oil effect -- and another small pice of the puzzle added. Let us know what further research brings you.... (such fun!!)

Very nice english carpenters chest. The interior would have had at least 2 trays. There are a good many images of similar chests. just goggle: english carpenter chest images. see what pops up, there are quite a few. As for the lock ,maybe the lock Museum of America located in Terryville Conn. could help in Dating the lock and key. much luck and thanks for the post.

There's a lock museum???? Wasn't Corbin from Terryville if I imagine correctly.. ?? Man -- and here I thought I wasn't going to learn much today....
Ps. Lilkin by the looks of that key I would go back a few years and say 1850's to 60's. (hope you find someone who actually would know... LOL)

T Mon, that looks like the key my cousin left in my trust for his wife's chastity belt when he went off the Crusades. Soon found that he left the wrong key! OK! It's an oldie! Maybe new to somebody? LOL.
