I figured it was time to show this trunk. I believe these are referred to as Immigrant Trunks. Forged Iron Scroll work, straps, hinges, handles, rivets and nails all original. Made from Solid, one piece boards which look like pine. Joined by dovetails as seen in image four. A nice brown/red paint. Original key also present, which is also forged iron. Very heavy and very large.....Almost entirely original except for a few fake rosehead nails someone tacked in here and there. Could be a old copy of a medieval style or a real pre-1800's trunk....not sure but it is still really cool. You can see a nearly identical box (with a little better iron work) in the Wallace Nutting Furniture Treasury.
43 inches long
24 inches high
23 inches wide
Something to consider.....the measurements of the boards all come to even standard measurements such as 6 1/4 or 15 inches even. If it were European wouldn't the measurements be metric? Just a thought.
More pictures upon request. Enjoy.
