Yep! That skinny guy in the pix was me 40 years ago when I was 40 lbs thinner. The cool 1926 T speedster was one we restored back in the early 70s and it made the front cover of Model T Ford Club of America while on a National tour to Catalina Island one year. I can't believe I had that car going over 90mph on the Interstate one day? It has a rajo head, Warford 3 speed coupled to the T 2 speed and a Ruxtel 2 speed rear end, which gives a lot of gear choices for the guy who likes to be busy while driving. What was I thinking? How we survived our youth is a subject to ponder for a very long time.

Roy's off the mark a bit with the Corvettes, but that gives me an opening. I was pulled into sports car racing because of my best friend & my aircraft skills. (The short version). At Sebring or Courtland in the '50's, 5 1st generation Corvettes were put in our sports car category. They were great on the straights but slow & clumsy in all the turns, which slowed all the other cars. They finally dropped out because they were obstructing the race. That was a true act of fair play & sportsmanship & they should have been commended for that. Never wanted a Corvette after seeing the lousy way they handled the curves.

      Antiquerose,
The pix was taken by Tom Osmond, one of the famous Osmond Brothers. My friend in the Franklin auto and my wife & I had been on a ride up to Park City Utah and were on the way back when we saw the Osmonds filming a production by Deer Creek Res. we stopped and were talking when Tom came over and took some pix. He later gave me this one which I have kept all these years. So now you know the rest of the story. Yes the Osmonds are close friends.

      Roycroftbooksfromme1,
I already confessed to being stupid for going 90 in the speedster and I have learned enough to not have the need to go 190 in anything with wheels.
Thx for the love it tho

      Blunderbuss2,
When speaking of Corvettes, we have to remember the market they were/are designed to sell to & it helps us understand why they accelerate so well but aren't real "racing" vehicles for the tracks. I loved the early vettes and love the new ones. Beautiful cars and fast too. I've never owned one but always wanted one. Maybe someday?

You sure .. they just built a new race track on the other side of my mts... only a 100,000 to be a member ... drive anything on it ...smiling ...the speedster you show looks like a fun project..in case you change your mind .....http://www.clubmotorsports.com/

      Roycroftbooksfromme1,
Thx for the suggestion but I haven't run the Rajo T for 25 yrs and its on my list to move from storage to the Museum at Lakeside Storage for display. It was a very fun project back in the day.

I read where the 1st generation Vettes had a 1 pc. rear axle. No wonder they were lousy in turns!

      Blunderbuss2,
Hmmmm? Yes I remember the 1st generation vetted. The 54 had a six in it with dual carbs & straught standard rear axle. While the 55 was the same car it came with the new V8 engine. Then came the much cooler 56-57 that were fast and stylin. Same rear end. The 58-59 were fast and pretty but now built for racing, just street dragging. Then cane the 60s and the new design that we all fell in love with. Same style rear end. Americans build cars for looks and acceleration, not for track or road racing like Europeans. We may learn eventually? It's about numbers & profit. Capatilism we call it.

      Trsparks,
Thx for the love it. U remember the real car!
    12. blunderbuss2 blunderbuss2, 8 years ago
Yeah, but not having a predominant drive wheel in turns is just stupid. Hard to believe Chevy got away with it that long. Greed I guess & avoiding tracks with curves. LOL!!

      Nlunderbuss2,
You are right & I can't stop wondering where they get these idiots that engineer the vehicles they sell us unwary buyers. I have a Nissan Titon P/U that is a very comfy rig & looks great but has a rear end that is a redesigned ExTerra and not made to haul heavy loads so has been a prob since the put them on the mkt. It is under powered & gets horrible gas mi. It looked good so I bought it w/o researching it! Dumb!!! Just bought a Duramax! That's a truck! It's all about looks and sales in Detroit! Quality, durability, engineering, etc all comes from Europe or Japan forcing us to follow suit by taking away our market share. Honda is a great example of that!

      Roycroftbooksfromme,
Yep, Henery got partially in to the Pix in 55 with the cute T Bird that was a "chick" car for the beach people but even with the "Interceptor" engine with the dual quads on the "fast models" they came out with in 57, they were no match for the Vettes and certainly not racing vehicles by any means. They were made, like most American cars, for looks to sell. Not for real performance like some of the European cars of the same era. They didn't cost as much either. Compare price of a 300 SL Mercedes with a Vette or T Bird & we see the difference in a hurry! I personally love them all!
