Alphonso Dabb of Elizabethport, NJ received patent # 63,482 in April 1867 for a barbed strip to be mounted on top of walls or fences to discourage intruders. This is the first patent issued for barbed fence.
This is a standard 18" collectors strip mounted on barn wood for display.

Mr. Dabb must have been a man of letters. In his patent he states
"To ELUCIDATE the novelty and merit of my invention ------------"

September 2017 - This display won third place in the Antiques category of the Hobby Collections Division of the Creative Arts Department of the State Fair of Texas recently. It will be on display there for the duration of the Fair.
