    The item is 7" long and 2" wide, there are no markings whatsoever anywhere on it. I found it at an abandoned scrap metal recycling yard.

      Buttonhole attachment for a sewing machine.

      I just used one of those today! Slapjack's right, it's an older buttonhole attachment for a sewing machine. The bottom opens up and there's a place for a buttonhole-shaped die. Attache it to a machine and it makes gorgeous buttonholes - IMO, far nicer than the automatic ones most machines do. No idea on make, just know it's not for an early-60s singer since that's the one I know well.
