This truck was rescued from trash, someone no longer wanted it. It's been sitting in our garage for at least 10 years. Does anyone know who could make it or when? It's very heavy, and it looks "old", but the way it's painted makes me think it's not that old and is only made to look that way. The details are interesting, too. It has a solid built, but a couple of wooden parts are broken or cracked. There are no marks of any kind on it. I am just wondering if this is something special that should be kept away from a 5-year old who's been asking to play with it =) Thanks!
This is likely home made to replicate a hand pump fire apparatus, used in the 1800's.
It is definitely well made and has a real aged look to it.
Water was poured into the tank from buckets, while two people would pump the lever, sending water through the hose to fight fires in tall structures.
These were either pushed by men or drawn by a horse team.
Our department hear in Hamilton, Ont. has a real horse drawn version of this, which is much larger, in our Station #1 museum.

That is cool and would be great in any collector fire equipment. As stated it's a display replica.
As far as letting a 5 yo play with it, I would definitely say no. Looking at the cracked spokes it would not last long being played with. More importantly there are way too many pieces on that for a child to get hurt on.

pickrknows, thank you for a clue and a great explanation of the truck's use. A fireman's job was, is and will always be one of the hardest and noblest ones, and i can only imagine how much harder it was in the early days. Deepest respect to all of them out there.
jscott, yes, it's quite incredible what people discard sometimes. I have quite a collection of such trash treasures.
