This has been in the family for over 100 years without any story about the piece passed down. The colors and imagery are beautiful.

Gien is French. Your jug dates from 1877.

"TRADEMARKS
Since 1821, the Faïencerie de Gien has marked each piece coming out of its factory. Those marks, now more commonly known as logos, have changed over the years. The following document enables collectors to date our vintage pieces: Gien Trademarks Since 1821.
DETAILS REGARDING MARKING FROM 1852 TO 1967
In 1852, Gien began marking its products with a letter and started with A. Following years would each have the next alphabet letter (for instance B was used in 1853) and this until 1877, 26 years for 26 letters.
From 1878 to 1903, the same was done for another 26 years using a different font.
From 1904 to 1929, the same again and with a third type of font.
Starting 1930 the marking procedure was changed: one letter of the alphabet would indicate two years, a second letter would indicate the month when the piece was manufactured (A for January, B for February, etc.), and sometimes a third letter would identify the craftsman."
FANTASTIC! And it is in such SUPERB condition! IO would love to replicate that imagery! (Reminds me of those famous tapestries...)
