This is my earliest piece of Sasaki glass and a piece I'm glad to have after searching for one for a while.
A covered bowl fit for a king or queen, maybe even the Emperor.
Beautifully designed and a very accomplished piece of pressed glass.
It has no markings, and is prior to Sasaki marking their pressed glass with the triple S logo.
It is 18cm (7 in) in diameter.
This would date no later than 1950, and may possibly be much earlier than that, but is not terribly early in Sasaki terms.
Sasaki Glass was established in Tokyo in 1902 by Sojiro Sasaki, primarily to make oil lamps, and he was a successful businessman.
Within a year he was selling all over Japan and also exporting lamps to Hawaii, China and South East Asia.
He was clever enough to change to household glass production as oil lamps died away, and through the remainder of the 20th Century the company grew in size and modernity to become one of Japan's most successful glass companies.
He was quick to take on new innovation and the company was the first to patent not just printing on glass but high speed screen printing.
In 2002 Sasaki merged with another great glass company, Toyo of Osaka, to make the Sasaki Toyo Group, or TSG.
They are now the biggest manufacturer of glassware in Japan, and continue developing innovative and attractive glass.
