Maybe it's a marriage of a lid to a pot...or not. The lid design matches up with the handles of the pot. The lid is a bit loose. There is a notch in the lid for the placement of a ladle. There's also a hairline crack in the pot and a chip on the inside rim of the lid which is not visible. ( no matter to me) .
There is a mold #21 on the lid and a mold #42 on the base of the pot.
There is a little drunk gnome sitting on the lid, laughing at me...

It's pretty cool looking! Could it be something to do with beer? I'm just basing that off the little gnome holding a beer stein.
@jscott - I thought the same thing, but it seemed weird to me to but beer in there - ya know? LOL
Have you tried german majolica biscuit /cookie jar?

robin56- no, I haven't looked at that yet because of there's a notch in the lid for a ladle.
Sounds like a soup or stew tureen. There is a German dish that does use beer in stew.
Could also be for wine or punch
Could be for something for serving punch or other alcoholic beverages.
It looks like majolica.
Now if I could only find a nice matching ceramic ladle....yeah, that's going to happen, lol!
Never say never. I thought that about one of my pieces that I wouldn't ever find a match to it. Sure enough flea market day found one.
robin56 - yes, it is majolica. I will have to look for a old ceramic ladle during my travels. Ya never know!
The fruit on the sides seems to match the fruit on the lid, my guess is this is original to each other. Have you considered sangria? That is a fruited wine punch, isn't it?
@katherine - sangria isn't a German beverage, so I don't think that would be it. I have never seen anything like this before and was hoping to find another online, but no such luck, lol!

If there's a notch for a ladle then it isn't a rumtopf. Rumtopfs are used to steep and ferment fruit with spirits, and the process takes weeks, sometimes months. Whilst a rumtopf lid isn't airtight in order to release the gases caused by the fermentation process, it certainly wouldn't have a ladle notch because nobody wants to find several weeks worth of dead insects floating and decomposing when they finally open the lid in anticipation of a good drink.
The decoration looks rather Christmassy to me so I'd lean towards either mulled wine or some simiar hot alcoholic concoction. The size of the handles also suggest hot contents; punch bowls and suchike tend not to have handles, and even when they do the handles are smaller than those on this piece, and lie close to the body of the pot.
I'm also having doubts about it being German; that elf looks more akin to those of Scandinavian legend rather than the traditional gnomes of Germanic legend.
