Awhile ago I posted this as an old chest. Through emails and talking with others I have learned a lot.
It is of Scandavian origin. The iron was hand forged and layered.
It is made out of only 3 pieces of wood: 1 the lid, 2 the bottom, and 3 the entire side is made of one piece of wood.
On the bottom there are no screws at all, the entire bottom is held on with hand cut wooden pegs that are about 2 inches long. I was able to carefully pull one out to take pictures because I was curious. It went right back in.
The coolest part is that if you run your hand down the side you can feel how the wood has expanded around the wooden pegs. Someone had painted it white and then spray canned it black. I did the very best I could without losing the integrity of it ( I hope). There are deep scratches where the lock was. And the back part of the lock on the inside was ripped out. I have pics.
The paint was a nightmare. I think it's looks awesome, and I love the grain of the wood. The sides and lid were made with the heart of the tree. The lid is just under an inch thick. The chest is 23 inches long, 13 1/2 inches wide, and 9 inches tall.
I'm very happy with how it turned out and I'm happy to be done with it. Anyone see Star Wars 7? I'm putting Anakins lightsaber in it because it reminds me slightly of the one from the movie.

Just now really studying the construction & see the "3 pieces". The coffer being made as 1 piece would make the ends weak, but it has held together. Light coloured woods aren't often strong when cut across the grain. Any idea what type wood ?

Blunderbuss2, the wood is fir. I may have to post another add with pictures of the way it's made. The wood is very thick. It's extremely sturdy as well. Nothing is out of place or loose anywhere.
or you can email me directly at redwritingism@gmail.com and then I can email some pictures of its construction.

B., woods can be strange. Because of where I live, most of the woods I have worked with are VERY hard & easily break across the grain. I have worked with northern woods in the past & don't remember any that had strength on a cross-cut. Not trying to start an argument. Just trying to understand the integrity of the end pieces? Help me out .

      B. . I know it's hard to imagine. I'm not offended or feel as though you are arguing. I'm glad you ask. I am going to do the best I can to explain. In the picture of the corner, it's not a direct corner, it's like one side of a stop sign right? Ok, so now we know it's not just a right angle. I don't know what was used to do it but the best way to describe it in modern terms is a biscuit joint be it ever so small. And the wood had to have been steamed to bend it to an obtuse angle. I am going to post the insides to help better understand this. I have tried to explain it to others, that it is one solid piece and they just don't understand until they see it with their own eyeballs. Then I see there eyes change and they ohhhh. . . I hope this helps. . . And I hope my nest post will help you see it. : )

Really beautiful refinish. I would categorize this as a document box. Just lovely...
