This painting hangs on my tiny living room wall, ha ha - many of you have seen it. My 1926 apt. bldg. (pic 4) had this painting behind a 1970's makeshift office in our lobby. A few years ago they did a beautiful lobby paint and redo but the painting was set aside as they took down the 70's "office". I asked if I could have it and told them I would not keep or sell it because it belongs to the St. Regis. Maybe it was a good day because they said yes, take it.
Ho2cultcha asked me to give a little more information. I think this is from the late 20's or 30's. No signature. I think this was hung over our lobby fireplace. It is 38"x18" with this neat old fumed frame. Sometime thru the years when this bldg. went from swank to flophouse - and then back again to its original beautiful place on the beach, the painting sat behind. By the way and this is true. Our mail delivery used to be "so so". Many times I jumped up and looked over to see if USPS had thrown my pkg into the "office". And, always - there was this painting.
I guess I am the right one to have this for a little while?
Thank you friends for loving this: Niceface, Aura, Thomas and Melanie
Thanks Thomas! Will post a quirky Ramones item for your expertise.
Love this Val....very atmospheric. You can almost hear the waves crashing on the surf. :)
A simple scene and yet there is so much beauty to look at, I imagine killer over a fireplace.
it's very beautiful! love the frame too!
Super post, picture and story!
Thanks Mike: They used to, then the LB Port constructed a sea wall for shipping traffic, sometime around WWII.
Thanks bladerunner - yes I am sure it looked great and the art tiles on the fireplace are browns/gold/oranges.
Thanks ho2cultcha - Love the frame too.
Thanks Kyra - You know me, I love the stories!
Thanks Lisa - I have a special solution "oil painting cleaner" that I've used with cotton balls. I bet some of the discoloration is from years of cigarette smoke! I think the painter must have been a resident, but no one from that first 70's remodel is still living here. Sad, because when I moved in 16 yrs ago there were 10 or so retirees.
Thanks friends for the love and nice comments!
It's a really cool bldg. Thanks Lisa - and I'm going to try the damp sponge next.
I love this story!! You're a good story teller, woman :)
The frame looks Art Deco? Love the painting, be interesting to see it after it's been cleaned. I read that museums clean their paintings with saliva? Yep, turns out spit has perfect Ph levels, lol, I used Q-tips and spit to clean stuff all the time! :)
Hey Sharone - thank you! I think when you visited it was still beyond the lobby office out of sight.
Katherine - ha ha ha - there is no way in H..L I am going to have enough spit to clean this oldie. It's going to have to stay this way until it goes back into the St. Regis vault :)
Stunning...
