Glass washboards were used during WWII as metal was in short supply. They were not all that popular as being made of glass they tended to break.
This was made by Howard Woodenware of Kent Washington. I can't find any information on the company.
This is displayed next to my ringer in the upstairs bathroom. I haven't tried to use these as I have a modern washer and dryer stashed away in the basement.

In the 50s music groups started using washboards like these and cheap home made instruments, they were called Skiffle Groups

I remember when I was a little kid living in Japan, my mother and grandmother using a washboard to wash our clothes. Too young to know, though, if it was glass, metal or what. Primitive, but beats pounding clothes with a rock! LOOKS COOL. ;>)

Thank you very much Brunswick. I tend to look for things that I never knew existed.

Thank you very much Nicefice. I don't think the glass ones are musical types though.
