I guess if you were stopping for gas and a break and saw the rows of Desert Sands items for sale it could have been a turn off, like any touristy stop. But to see this swirly glaze one at a time - pretty gorgeous.

Thank you ho2 - not as pretty as your vase. I don't see much of this at thrift shops which kinda surprises me. Hope to meet you up N sometime this year!

Tell me more about this, where is it from? Made of sandstone?

Hi Elisabeth - hope you are having a good holiday. I think this pottery was mostly found in Western US states, perhaps of dessert sand and clay. By the time I remember seeing it 70's-80's - mainly at tourist shops inside truck stops. But I have a feeling it didn't start out for that market.

Ho2cultcha's post has more links for you to look at:

      His vase is very beautiful.

Thankyou, very nice vase! I bought some costers (hope I use the right Word now) that looks somewhat the same. Bought those in Rio Ranco New Mexico ages ago. I have to take a closer look at them.

Hi olebodie - I used to see lot's of this in thrift stores in the 80's and 90's - so that usually means it "fell out of popularity, and into the thrift store, ha ha - meaning someone wanted to get rid of it from their parents place". Now, rarely see this swirl of sand colors. I am very sure it's from this side of the Continental Divide and not Arkansas.

Want to say again - you have the most amazing old ceramics collections!
