That's a really nice painting. I wonder why some artists just slap on their name instead of making it legible?

I've been trying to chase down the garb they're wearing just to get a feel for the era. If your certain the paint is acrylic, acrylic paint was invented in 1946-49 and became commercially available in 1950. I'll keep trying for you :). It's a good painting in a decent frame.

I am not certain it's acrylic it may be oil since it's on the smooth side hard to tell no build up of paint. But I think the frame is not old and I cleaned about 40-50 years of grime off of it. Mic century will be about right in my opinion. more i look at it it may be oil just quick strokes no build up can see areas like pole in water looks like it was done wet on wet.

I believe it's likely an oil painting then varnished, which isn't too uncommon of a thing to do. My mom used to brush a special varnish over some of her paintings.
Also I can get those guys hats to come up on a search when I search 'Padre Hats'.

I think you are right when I looked at this morning with light hitting at right angel can tell it is varnished. Nice find on the hats. thanks!

It looks like it might be by James Stephenson who did a lot of cartoons for the New Yorker -- the faces look like his, signature kind of similar and it is really funny, as his cartoons often are. What a great piece.

Never mind -- I see the New Yorker cartoonist spells his name differently (so why did I think the signatures looked similar?!)

WHY make a unreadable mark? I used to paint and marked so you you could at least figure it out. I have sold a couple hundred pieces and if you look up KBW you will eventually find something about even me! I will post the only one I have left.
