    I bought this Goodyear sign on Saturday. It is porcelain and it was made in India. I believe it dates to 1900 or earlier. It states "Carriage Rubber "which was actually invented in the 1850s to use on carriage wheels. The manufacturers used "India Rubber" on the wheels so I am assuming this sign dates to pre 1900. Does anyone have any thoughts? I am also interested in the number "51" inside the bells. What does that stand for? Maybe I need to find an Indian tire historian?

      I'd say your sign is a re-pop especially if it's made it India!

      Are you saying it's fake. No way. This sign is very legit and heavy as hell. The research I have shows it was made sometime after 1922 since that is when Goodyear entered that market. The importer brings in old items from India and he found this on recent buying trip. I own approx. 45 Tire signs and I know a fake. This is legit. The last clue I need is what the 51 inside a bell means?

      Not offended as I have collected Tire signs for 30+ years now and I know a legit porcelain sign. This is one. I have now been doing research on Indian Rubber on carriage wheels and Goodyear went to India in 1922 to expand their markets. The feeling I get is that the Indian public was used to carriage rubber on their carts so The Indian Goodyear Co. used carriage Rubber as a name to familiarize the public with what Goodyear was all about. Just a hunch but my research continues. One can't get offended on the internet. It's not worth it.

      Hello Tirebob, that is one nice sign you found. You are absolutely correct, Goodyear entered Indian market about 90 years back. I worked for over 3 yrs in their Aurangabad(India) plant. I still have a lot of friends who have been working for last 25 years with Goodyear. I will see if someone knows more about the sign and the number 51.

      I have the same sign in excellent condition, bought it from a dealer years ago
