I have two similar coins, looking like the one above. They're about the size of a US quarter. A cousin gave them to me. He said a friend of his who had been diving on a wreck years ago in Indonesia gave them to him. So the only thing I really know is the coins came from a shipwreck in Indonesia. (And this diving excursion occurred 30-40 years ago.)
I'm just trying to get information about them, as I am not a coin collector.
Chinese cash coin commonly from the 1600-1800's.
I am not soliciting, by any means, but I would like to have some idea of value. Does anyone have any idea of value (just a ballpark idea) ? I gave my college-age son a necklace with one of these coins, but it occurred to me that it may have significant value — ? Not something a college student should be wearing around his neck?

I have four or five similar coins and others with round hole in the middle. Mine were brought home from Luzon after WWII by a family member. I can't read them so never bothered with them. If I really wanted to know I would go to an Asian cafe or store and look for the oldest person there and ask if they could tell me what they are. I see them all the time at flea markets here so I naturally assume they are common place. If they turn out to be rare my grandson will be happy.
For the most point, they're rarely of value. If you have multiple of the same item, then it's probably pretty common. Especially after uncovering a cache of them.
Most World Coin collectors have one or more of old Chinese coins. What you really want is the silver/gold, or never circulated pieces, or pictorial pieces. Interestingly, a lot of ancient Greek coins don't even sell for $5 a piece in collector's markets, either. Too many were made, I guess.
Condition is also everything. This is a bit worn. Never clean them, though.
Value depends on the inscription which is hard to read on this one, but most are common and can be had for $3 or less.
