I found this very large laquer screen in the garbage a couple of months ago and just stuck it in my warehouse and forgot about it. it appears to be missing the right panel out of six panels. but it's pretty beautiful and maybe unusual because the colors are different. beautiful dragons on this piece!

when do you think this was made? i was thinking 30s-50s, but i really don't know. the colors are so unusual for one of these.

Your dates are close on, I have a screen from that era and craftsmanship is equal. Bet it's heavy?

yes Dizzydave, it is heavy. i have a friend who deals in very fine asian antiques in singapore/bangkok/jakarta and he is very curious about the screen because he says the colors are very unusual. he thinks it was probably influenced by the Fauvists, which makes sense.

Is yours double sided? I have the full color on front and back has more black/white scene. Mine is room divider. Heres in link.. You can see it in background.

yes Dizzydave, it is two-sided. i posted the other side in another post here on cw. i'd love to find out more about this. i think the color is pretty rare and unusual.

i just put in a photo of the reverse side - an arrangement of rocks with a flower and other plants.
