    First off, I need to apologize for the poor photography on my part on this post, though I think it is interesting enough to still warrant a post. Look at the description in the second picture for more, but essentially during the Gold Rush California was over populated with men and had very few women. Men were forced to play female roles in theater, etc. Once women started moving west theater was a common reason why and San Francisco quickly become an entertainment hotbed. For more detailed info, check out that second picture.

    The first photo is of Martha Poites McRoberts and it was taken in 1887.
